Happy Summer !
So it’s summer again, and Carole and i are still here at 273 Kent Lodge Road. i have some pictures i wanted to share with you and i’ll do my best to explain what we are doing with our lot. i am trying to emulate David Smith and what he does with his Save a Native Plant Nursery in Fredericton. But i can see i have a long way to go to be in the same league as David.
here are some pictures of the house – she’s
still standing ! in front of the house in the
picture below you can see virginia roses,
that picture was taken Canada Day, 2022,
so they are not in bloom yet
this is what they look like when they
are in bloom, with an added picture
of my beautiful wife, Carole Asselin
carpathian bellflower blue and white clips
they are not flowering yet, but this is what they look
like when they are flowering
this is a japanese anemone we got from David
this is a quick fire panicle hydrangea we got from Kent
last summer because Michelle and Bronson had one
and Carole wanted one – it’s just about to flower
i think this is evening primrose
and i think this is swamp primrose,
but i could have the two mixed up
this is an oak sapling – we have four
that were were started from acorns that
were gathered from Michelle and Bronson’s
the year Xavier was born
this is a lylac bush that gives white flowers
but it didn’t flower much this year – we got it
from mom and dad
this is alfalfa – there are two bunches
this is a crabapple bush we also got from David
this is a hosta garden and Carole’s
home for a gnome
this is spilled wine weigela in
the triangle garden
this is more hostas
this is a cherry tree
it’s not in bloom now
these are asiatic pot lilies
they are just about to bloom
this is a spyrea bush growing on the rock
these are some lupins i planted two years
ago – they didn’t do anything until this
year but they’re doing great now
here is some glow girl birch leaf
spyrea – i got them on special –
half price – at Kent – and they
didn’t do well for the first two
years but look at them now !
here is another picture of the virginia roses
man ! that bush is getting big – they smell great !
here is an emerald cedar that we had to
move away from beside the house when
they redid the weeping tiles – good thing
too ’cause that thing is huge !
speaking of huge, this is a scotch pine
that was just a tiny thing when we moved
here in 1987 – now it’s 60 feet tall !
here are some pictures of the back yard
here are some pictures of noisette bushes
we have three of them and some new ones
also when they redid the weeping tiles,
we had to tear down the old deck.
the guy who did the excavating left the
footings and i puzzled over how to get rid
of them. finally, i had a brain fart : why not
make benches with them ? it wasn’t easy but
we set them up – i call them our Stonehenges
the red clover is so tall – i was thinking of
using it for a ground cover but maybe not
even more hostas
no idea what this is
i was thinking of calling this place
The Birches, but it looks like i
should call it Hosta Heaven !
The End
Well, i guess that’s it for this time. i will try to repost when things are in bloom – especially the virginia roses ! Too bad i can’t send smell over the ‘net, cause those virginia roses have the best smell of anything i have ever smelled (except maybe mom’s homemade bread) ! If you are lucky enough to be here in mid july, you will smell what i mean. So, get away from your computer and put down your phone and get out in your garden already ! That’s where i’m headed !
